‘Venus’

Lin Yuzu was indeed once called that.

Literally called the morning star of the people, the light of dawn, and the distant starlight that illuminates the way for the people before dawn. Or to put it mysteriously, the woman symbolizes death and rebirth.

But for Lin Yuzu, ‘Venus’ is nothing but a symbol.

It definitely doesn’t represent her.

It’s just that the time she spent with those words were indeed smooth, bright, and arguably full of hope. . .

Boom!!

The shock from the impact caused the dust on the wall to rustle down, and with her back knocked against the wall, Lin Yuzu let out a muffled groan from the pain that came from the recoil.

There was no room to breathe as she braced herself with one hand and immediately rolled towards the shadows on the side of the bed.

Spikes appeared densely on the wall like a pin cushion, pointing in the direction she dodged while their tips were stained red.

Because of the sudden stiffness caused by the pain, she wasn’t able to fully dodge the attack. Although it was a flesh wound that would soon heal, frequent activation of her powers would consume energy, which in itself is a disadvantage in a stalemated fight.

. . . That’s why it’s said that it was an ability for cowards.

For a long time, Lin Yuzu felt that it was really useless.

The pain of the wound was soon replaced with a numbing feeling as it healed as her pursuer came in an instant. Lin Yuzu took a shallow breath, raised her head, and stared at the fist at point-blank range that immediately followed–

Smash!!

The large fist, almost half of Lin Yuzu’s head, narrowly brushed her cheek and hammered into the wooden nightstand!

Sawdust flew apart and sharp pieces of cut wood flew past in front of her. Lin Yuzu’s forehead was slightly painful as the warm liquid flowed over her right eye, covering half her vision with a hazy red.

The bedside table was made by herself. Xiao Xiao painted a small red-like pattern on top, but now it turned into broken pieces. It’s not even clear anymore whether the red drops are paint or her blood.

No time to think about this.

Lin Yuzu jumped on the bed.

She’s considered to be partially a strength awakened anyway, her physical fitness is far superior to ordinary people even if she never exercised. her extraordinary jumping ability made her almost touch the ceiling when she leaped over the sky.

The man who missed his punch and his sweep to the side raised his head back and locked eyes with Lin Yuzu who was changing her stance in the air.

The man gave his name before the fight, Gao Shuo. The man is as tall and as sturdy as his name that has an intimidating aura when faced, even his destructive capabilities can’t be underestimated.

The opponent’s physique and strength were far superior to her own, and his use of abilities is skillful and flexible. In contrast, Lin Yuzu’s defense is weak and her means of attack is almost non-existent. Her bullets are limited and each shot needs to be used carefully. Her good physical skills and inferior in comparison because of the gender differences and body type. No matter how she looks at it, there’s no possibility of winning.

But- she’s survived until now and it wasn’t so easy for her either!

Gao Shuo’s rapidly shrinking pupils reflected the petite and lithe body.

Black trousers wrapped around her slender legs with ankle-high hiking boots that outline her slender body. No matter how he looks at her, she looks like a frail and weak girl, but is full of power and attacking, like a dexterous long whip slashing from top to bottom!

—can’t avoid it.

Lin Yuzu’s bone structure is small and light. Although she lacks the strength compared to the same trained adult men, she’s also more swift, agile, and wins in terms of speed.

Her attack hit Gao Shuo’s arm which he raised to defend, and even though it was covered in mud, it still shattered the wrist bone of his left hand.

When he was in pain, Lin Yuzu opened her legs and hooked them around his shoulders and the two fell on the ground due to inertia. She then locked her legs, twisting them around Gao Shuo’s neck and the only thing remaining was to twist them, to break his throat. . .!

“Well. . . ?!”

A sharp stabbing pain immediately came from her thigh.

It was the clump of mud that he had attached to his body! The mud turned into barbed roped that wrapped around her leg, and in that moment of stalemate, Gao Shuo seized the opportunity to break free.

Lin Yuzu heard a cold laugh squeeze out of her throat. Her right leg was seized and was slammed into the wall once again with a spin! Her waist hi the protruding part of the wall which was the edge of the window sill. She failed in orienting her body that when she fell on the ground, the protruding spike pierced her right shoulder blade.

. . . it hurts.

Lin Yuzu gritted her teeth and swallowed back her tears from the pain.

The spike that ran through her slowly bent like a hook and hanged her from the shoulder. She drew a breath and raised her upper body, feeling the tiny barbs spreading from her injury.

“. . . . I really underestimated you.”

Gao Shuo held his injured wrist with a gloomy look.

Although he was injured before, he was almost strangled by surprise. For him, the anger caused by that moment of humiliation was more than the dread of fighting with his life on the line.

However, after putting away his contempt, he still won in the end.

Gao Shuo looked down at the woman who was on the ground.

She was very small and slim as if she could be carried by one hand. At this moment, she was forced to lean against the wall, her eyes slightly closed while blood from her forehead stained her white cheeks, staining her collar along her delicate neck as her chest slowly rose and fell.

He had read her information, of course, he knew that she wasn’t as. . . young as she appeared.

But that innocent face and slender body undoubtedly look like a child.

“Hey.”

He kicked her.

. . . Her damp eyelashes quivered slightly before she opened her eyes.

The pupils of her eyes that were covered by the shadows and mixed with blood had a hauntingly beautiful look. Seemingly losing the power to resist, she simply stared at him silently.

“You don’t have to be so. . . defiant. I have no intention of killing you.” Gao Shuo laughed, squatted down to collect her gun, and lifted her chin with his working hand, “If you had been more docile, you wouldn’t have been so badly injured. After all. . . I’ve been thinking about it since a long time ago, ‘Venus’ really is as beautiful as a doll.”

Gao Shuo’s thumb grazed her cheek hard, “Behave yourself and I’ll take you away in one piece.”

“. . .”

The bruising sight easily stirred up Lin Yuzu’s unpleasant memories.

She pursed her lips in disgust as her lower body tightened. The man then asked her, “The potion that turns zombies back to humans – I know the Linshan base finally completed it! The finished product must have been given to you during the last monster wave, where did you hide it?”

“There’s no such thing. . . cough!”

The taste of iron flooded Lin Yuzu’s throat and couldn’t help but cough, “Even if you think there is, you think I would have kept it until now?”

“No, you have.” Gao Shuo shook his head. He seemed convinced of his source, “Even if there’s no complete potion, you must have the method of making it, you’re ‘Venus’!”

“. . . ugh!”

A tearing pain came from her right shoulder. The continuous blood loss made her right-hand cold and num. Lin Yuzu clenched her teeth knowing that she was in a bad condition.

‘Venus.’

It wasn’t technically referring to her, rather to the experimental project that uses her as a test subject. It was a project conducted by numerous allied bases led by Linshan Base to use people with the ability of ‘not getting infected by the zombie virus’ to develop a special medicine to block zombification. She was among tens of millions of people used as a test subject.

The plan was successful.

Before the sudden monster wave destroyed everything, they were able to produce an injection that could interrupt the zombification process within two minutes of injury. At the end of the experiment, they were indeed able to produce a sample of a medicine that could turn zombies back into humans.

It’s only a possibility since it was still an unfinished product that hadn’t been tested and isn’t necessarily effective.

And those unfinished samples were already missing long before the arrival of the monster wave.

Yes, Lin Yuzu has all the experimental data in her hands, but. . . she doesn’t plan to hand it over to this person.

“I said, there is no such thing. . . cough. . .” Faced with his oppressing question, Lin Yuzu coughed out a mouthful of blood. The hair at her temples was stuck to her cheeks due to sweat and blood, and yet she suddenly let out a laugh, “. . . And I’m afraid you’ve really underestimated me.”

Gao Shuo was stunned.

Their position this time was the place where Lin Yuzu hid in the beginning. Her right hand was on the desk under the window. The spider plant hanging on the edge of the table seemed to be squeezed by something, shook slightly before falling down.

Snap.

The plastic flower pot fell to the ground.

Something jolted behind Gao Shuo! He wanted to pull back the moment he sensed something was wrong, but Lin Yuzu’s drooping left hand suddenly came out like lightning speed and yanked him by the collar!

There were still his companions guarding outside! Gao Shuo turned his head to look in the direction of the window. The moonlight remained at the half-opened window and there was nothing. . . no, were those two vines there since before?

The thin vines hanging over the windowsill snaked towards the desk, quietly closing in the side of Gao Shuo’s face.

The green vines were decorated with orange flowers, which showed an almost transparent color under the moonlight, and when they bloomed, the room was suddenly filled with a fragrant and intoxicating aroma.

The first to bear the brunt of the scent was Gao Shuo, who screamed in his heart, but it was already too late. His eyes slowly blanking out in the face of the aroma. . .

Lin Yuzu pulled out her dagger inside her boot.

The thorn in her right shoulder softened after losing its controller. She endured the pain and pulled herself out, hissing at the pain. She then aimed the tip of her dagger at the man’s unprotected eyeball and pierced it deeply with the weight of her whole body.

. . .

The sharp pain probably awakened the man’s consciousness, and the moment he was nailed to the floor, he stared at the intact, bloodshot eyeball and opened his mouth. “. . .”

No sound came out and his pupils darkened.

The bright red liquid spread to the edge of the overturned flowerpot.

Lin Yuzu wanted to pick it up. . . but her hands were also very dirty. After wiping her hands on her clothes in a hurry, she placed the fallen spider plant and the anemone that was originally placed under the desk on the table.

There were red fingerprints on the edge of the light-colored flowerpot, which she carefully wiped off.

The desk was covered with the lonely moonlight. Outside the window, the thin tall man in the yard felt a little uneasy in his heart. Before their mission, Gao Shuo warned him that whatever happens inside the house, stays inside the house and that he should stand a little further away. He shouldn’t come in unless called.

Noises of fighting clearly echoed inside the house and he didn’t get himself involved, not to mention that it sounded like it was the little girl who was getting beaten.

But now. . . He felt that it was a little too quiet.

The tall, thin man gulped and shouted at the dark window, “Big brother?”

There was no response.

His voice seemed to be swallowed by the silence of the night.

The tall thin man’s heart quivered knowing that things were going wrong, after all, he experienced a lot of life and death situations with him. He didn’t hesitate to wrap his whole body with wind and rushed towards the house, but faster than him were the rustling vines that grew and sealed the window in the blink of an eye.

Mutant creatures! When. . . ?!

The tall, thin man turned the wind into blades and slashed at the densely packed flower vines.

His awakened ability is wind control. In his hands, the gentle night breeze became the sharpest and most flexible weapon.

As expected, the wind blades couldn’t cut through the vines, yet he aggressively sent more, only to diffuse and blow away gently before approaching the target.

“. . .”

This scene wasn’t something that hadn’t occurred before.

In fact, it had appeared many times before. When encountering a mutated creature or person of the same ability, if he doesn’t tightly grasp the wind he controls, the control will be taken away from him.

A raspy chip sounded behind him.

The tall, thin man stiffly turned his head, and on the courtyard rested the cyan, slender bird with a long neck and beautiful tail feathers that reflected a shiny glow under the moonlight.

Thin ice crystals fell above it, and the snow-winged bird was flapping its wings while hovering.

Another mutant creature, what’s going on?!

One of them has the same attributes as him and he can’t handle it alone! The tall thin man glanced over the window covered by vines, there was still no movement from the inside.

He dodged the ruthless flying ice picks and ran towards the compound next door where they were resting and shouted, “Sihui! help!”

On the other side of the courtyard wall, the female of the three, Pan Sihui, popped her head up and fired at the cyan slender bird.

The tall thin man got his chance to catch his breath and turned back to match her ballistic attack towards the cyan slender bird and solve it first. They can always run away if they can’t win.

No one noticed the vine curtain covering the window slowly moved away.

The ice picks suddenly became dense while the air around the cyan slender bird slightly stopped and was shot on its wings and fell down. At the same time, the tall thin man inside its wind shield stopped for a moment.

—– bang!

A fleeting opportunity, he dodged the rapid-fire of ice picks but not the gunshot mixed within the attacks.

“. . . ah!”

Her companion fell to the ground instantly. When Pan Sihui whipped her head to the origin of the shot, there was no one by the window. While in a daze, she was immediately entangled by the vines that had crept up the wall and were dropped into the courtyard.

She quickly pulled out her short knife and cut the vines that were wrapped around her, not caring why the two birds stopped attacking. She then rolled on the ground and ran in the direction of the courtyard door.

The iron door of the courtyard had no complicated locks and could be opened easily, but the moment she pulled the door, a bullet accurately hit her wrist.

“. . ..Ah! Ahhhhhhhhh!!” Pan Sihui held her wound and let out a miserable scream.

She leaned back against the door and turned around. The young girl who had opened the door for her before was walking down the porch with the gun in her left hand, directly aiming at her forehead.

The moonlight fell on that pale face and the light lake blue eyes contained an icy light, dangerous and sharp like the cold glint reflected on a blade.

“Don’t. . . don’t kill me! Please, don’t kill me!”

Pan Sihui knew that she was trembling. She had never taken life seriously, knowing that she isn’t good at fighting, she always avoided going to the front lines. Fortunately, she knows how to make good use of her abilities and basically can’t leave the base, but this time. . . this time it’s all because of. . .

“Gao Shuo. . . It’s all because of Gao Shuo! It’s them! They’re the ones who want to attack you! They forced me!” Pan Sihui shouted, “Don’t kill me, my ability, my ability is to create crystal nuclei! I can help you, I, I. . . .”

Pan Sihui looked at the young girl who had a nonchalant look. Her voice slowly weakened as if she was being strangled, “. . . I can do anything. . .”

“Don’t worry.”

She doesn’t know about ‘Project Venus’ nor is she a combatant. . . This three-person team didn’t come here specifically for her and since she is a precious ability user who’s being protected, why did she go out of the base?

Lin Yuzu examined the woman who was cowering in the doorway, “Answer my questions first.”

Pan Sihui was stunned and visibly relaxed as she nodded aggressively, “I’ll answer, I’ll answer!”

Lin Yuzu asked, “What are you here for?”

“Ah? This, this. . .” She seemed to be struggling with what to say. Pan Sihui froze for a moment before answering, “Actually we. . . no, it’s Gao Shuo. He robbed supplies from the base and escaped.”

Lin Yuzu, “. . . From the base? Why?”

No matter how you look at it, the three of them aren’t strong enough to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, they can even barely protect themselves at best. Lin Yuzu couldn’t think of a reason why they separated themselves from a protective base.

Pan Sihui replied, “Because a monster wave happened recently. . .”

A monster wave, recently.

These two keywords stirred Lin Yuzu’s nerves. She reflexively interrupted the woman’s narrative, “What monster wave? How recent?”

“When. . . you don’t know?”

Pan Sihui was more surprised than earlier, “It was the monster wave a month and a half ago! Exactly the same one two years ago. . .”

“. . .”

Lin Yuzu tightened her grip on her gun.

She didn’t know. Pujiang base wasn’t far from here, but she didn’t feel anything. The gentle and calm daily life blurred her perception of time, but speaking of a month and a half ago. . . she vaguely remembered something suspicious in her memory.

About the same time in the past, one day, she had seen an unusual flock of birds migrating south and the ‘disturbing’ mutant creatures Xiao Xiao mentioned.

Xiao Xiao. . . it can’t be Xiao Xiao.

But the zombie king that attacked the humans two years ago should have been killed by her sister!

Lin Yuzu froze in place and didn’t react for a long time. Her bloody memories of the past flooded her mind that stirred with her chaotic thoughts.

Pan Sihui continued, “After that monster wave, Pujiang base was also completely destroyed. . . not many people were left and out base chief also died. Gao Shuo, he,” Her face suddenly showed obvious disgust, “He’s just a madman trying to take advantage on. . . our base commander’s remaining daughter. He then injured the man who stopped him, grabbed the rest of the supplies, and ran away.”

She glanced carefully at Lin Yuzu, adding, “Cao Feng, the one over there, is the brother he made before the apocalypse, while I was threatened. . .”

Lin Yuzu was silent for a moment, “Is there a new family of three that has recently joined the Pujiang base?”

“Yes, yes!” Pan Sihui’s eyes lit up when she heard this question, “Xindu, right? I remember you’re the one that Du Yan was talking about when he first came to the base! He mentioned you several times. . . cough, at that time, we had little manpower so we couldn’t come to you. . .”

“But they’re all still alive! The woman was the one who was injured by Gao Shuo, not badly! I know where they are, I can take you to. . .”

Lin Yuzu responded, “No need.”

Pan Sihui, without the slightest fluctuation in her eyes, said, “Oh, oh, then. . . I answered your questions, you won’t kill me, right?”

Lin Yuzu also thought about this issue.

If she pushed her time forward a little, before she separated from her companions and lived with Xiao Xiao, she might have let the person in front of her go nonchalantly, but now. . . Lin Yuzu wouldn’t fully trust the enemy, she is assessing the danger level of this person.

If she lets her go, will she just leave?

Is she hiding something to stab her in the back?

She knows other ability users, is there anyone among them who may pose as a threat?

There’s undoubtedly a simple solution to this problem. . . Lin Yuzu moved her injured right hand and gripped the harmonica in her coat pocket. Feeling the uneven pattern on the wooden casing against her palm.

She kept silent and Pan Sihui’s heart grew heavy.

She doesn’t want to be killed, she doesn’t want to die yet! The silence was like an invisible hand, tightening its grip on her throat in silent torture. . . Then the door behind her moved.

Click.

Someone opened the door. The girl with the gun was surprised and she even turned her face away, as if completely distracted by the slight movement.

Pan Sihui’s heart was about to jump out of her throat.

She turned her head. . . the moment she got a good look at the person coming, she slammed into the gap that was pushed open!

Faster! Faster! I can run away!

She didn’t know that her reckless action was stepping the tense nerves of her opponent. Lin Yuzu almost didn’t hesitate and subconsciously fired.

—bang!

The author has something to say:

Between the two of them, Xiao Xiao’s combat power is extremely high but wouldn’t fight while Lin Yuzu is like a bunny who acts like a wolf, which compliments her.

I’ve been struggling for two days to write the battle process in detail. This chapter highlights how cold and ruthless Yuzu is and her handsome moment! Probably.

But I still remember that this is a daily fluffy story, it will be gone from now on, please cherish their moments. . .

. . . Woah. . .

Lin Yuzu so cool. . .

I know, I know, I’m late with the chapter, but this is an especially long chapter, okay?? I definitely didn’t fangirl at Lin Yuzu at how cool and handsome she is fighting against her odds, okay?? Definitely not.

We also get some background on who she really is, so that’s good hahaha!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter as much as I did!!

I’ll post another one in a few more hours and then post the last two tomorrow. Do look forward to them!

May the abyss be with you~!
